I am looking for a book or a collection of short stories I remember from my childhood. It is about a family living on the most fertile farmland in the world. When they threw a kernal of corn on the ground they could watch the stalk grow and have corn on the cob a couple of hours later. The family tried to plant pumpkins, but this was a mistake. The vines grew so fast they dragged the pumpkins along the ground, threw sparks and started a fire. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Can you help me with a title or author? Thanks.

Your description reminds me of a series of books by Sid Fleischman. In particular McBroom's Wonderful One Acre Farm, I specifically remember that one of the many things they grew on this "magically" fertile soil was corn. I don't remember pumpkins, but it's been a few years. It is one of many McBroom chapter books.
