The concept of stress and worker performance.
The company applies the stress by saying do it or your fired.
The employee has to perform what ever when ever how ever and for whom ever.
It's that simple.
Any and all studies on how good treatment = better performance you can through out the window.
Company's don't want to hear it because it would cost money not make it...

I think the basic thing is that stressed workers do not perform as well. THere's lots of research showing that happy, relaxed workers do better. A recent popular book called "Contented cows give better milk" is the latest management thing on this. Children do better in school if they have recess. Laughter and humor and fun at work make for better productivity. There is a ton of information on this.

Some stress can be productive, such as that associated with trying to meet a deadline. On the other hand, stress in the form of burnout will have a negative effect on work performance.
