9/8x = -3/4 -1/3

9/8x = (-9-4)/12

x= (-13/12) / (9/8)

x= (-13*8)/(12*9)

x= -104/108

x= -26/27

2006-06-26 05:38:21 · answer #1 · answered by QuestionAnswer 2 · 1 0

9/8x+1/3 = -3/4

subtract 1/3 from both sides:

9/8x= -13/12 (3/4= 9/12, 1/3= 4/12)

Multiply both sides by 8x and 12:

108= -104x

Divide both sides by 104:

-27/26 = x

The principle is to isolate x on one side without any thing added or subtracted to it. Then divide and or multiply by the proper factors to get x= a number.

If you were really trying to solve 9/(8x+1/3) = -3/4 you can apply the same priniciples and solve (multiply by 8x+1/3, and you are on your way.

After reviewing the answers I was confused by your notation. I thought it read 9/(8x), not (9/8)x. If it is the later correct answer is -26/27. Need to be careful with parenthesis.

The way you have stated the problem, the logical interpretation for the leftmost term is 9 divided by 8x. If the other form is meant, you should write it as (9/8)x

Assuming the logical interpretation, multiply both sides of the equation by the common denominator, 24x, giving

27 + 8x = -18x
27 = -26x
- 27/26 = x

when you try to isolate the x from the equation you get the value of x as you wan the value of x the ans is solved below

9/8x = -3/4 -1/3

9/8x = (-9-4)/12

x= (-13/12) / (9/8)

x= (-13*8)/(12*9)

x= -104/108

x= -26/27

9/8x + 1/3 = -3/4

Subtract 1/3 from both sides, making

9/8x = -3/4 -1/3 (which becomes -3/4 + -1/3)
9/8x = -9/12 + -4/12 (found LCD)
9/8x = -13/12

Cross-multiply; 9 X 12 = 108 and -13 X 8x =-104x

108 = -104x

Divide both sides by -104 and get

x = -108/104

Reduce to lowest terms, and x = -27/26

Multiply both sides of the equation, all of the terms, by the common denominator, in this case 24, then balance the equation so that the variable is on one side and the whole numbers are on the other. So, step one multiply by 24 gives you 27x+8=-18. Next isolate the variables, 27x=-18-8. Then sum everything together, 27x=-26. Then divide by the multiplier to get the value for x, x=-26/27

Here is what you do.

Your equation is (9/8)x + 1/3 = -3/4

First thing to do is get x by itself. You do this by subtracting 1/3 from both sides. Now you have (9/8)x = (-3/4 - 1/3).

From there, you will then divide by (9/8) from both sides to get x completely by itself. So now, your equation should read x = (-13/12) / (9/8), and that should give you your answer.

Hope this helps you understand it as well.

9/8 X = -3/4 - 1/3
9/8 X = -9/12-4/12
9/8 X = -13/12
27/24X = - 26/24
x = -26/24 / 27/24

You should be able to take it from there.

9/8x + 1/3 = -3/4
9/8x = -3/4 + (-1/3)
9/8x = -9/12 + (-4/12)
9/8x = -13/12
x = (-13/12) : (9/8)
x = (-13/12) * (8/9)
x = -26/27

Hope this helps :)

(9/8)x + (1/3) = (-3/4)

Multiply everything by 24

27x + 8 = -18
27x = -26
x = (-26/27)

ANS : (-26/27)
