We recently found some mice droppings in the garage. I'm anxious the mice might try to migrate from the basement to our living quarters.

Set some traps or put out some poison. Also, I've heard MOTH BALLS work.

Here's a web site that promotes a natural repellant: http://www.critter-repellent.com/mice/how-to-get-rid-of-mice.php

If you can afford it, call an exterminator.

My Grandparents had this problem. They knew that there were mice in their garage, so they set two traps. Those went off within minutes, so they reset them. They did this till the traps no longer went off. They ended up catching 13 mice in one day. You put the traps in shelves and places that the mice can hide at. Along the walls are a good place too.

Get traps. Bait them with peanut butter. Place them in the area where you found the droppings, with the bait end up against a wall or other upright surface that the mice would travel along.
Mice travel with the aid of their whiskers, so the trap must be set against the vertical surface they travel along.
Good luck.
Also, clean out any birdseed, grass seed or other food source that they may be using for food.

1. traps

2. Professional - make sure a couple of weeks after they've been there, you do a walk around your house. Get some steel wool and caulk (clear) any crack or crevice (1/4" and larger) put the steel wool in then caulk it into place.

Don't do the steel wool and caulk until after you get the critters out. You don't want to lock them in or have them die in the walls.
