Just tell them that is an adult only party. Most people will not have an issue getting a sitter for the kids.

You word the invitation to say "Your invited, to an adults only birthday party."
Same thing for wedding receptions.
Say what you want. This will help you detremine which of your friends are likely to respond.

Make it late in the afternoon, put a late time with no end time or just say til sun comes up and put a list of babysitter agencies on the back of the invitation.

Would just make invitations that make it clear that it is an "adult" party.

It's your party and you can invite whomever you want. Just be straightforward about it. In your written invitations, say "Please forgive the inconvenience, but this will be an adults-only party. Please leave the kids at home with a babysitter."
