Ignore the hecklers in the group...
Nintendo Gamecube is by far the best alternative for your kids to play.
Pros: Games are geared to children (still some adult ones for your enjoyment) with characters they recognise from movies and television. Graphics are decent and there are opportunities to purchase games that involve higher level thinking, rhythm, and of course - fine motor skills. Most of all they will have fun!
Cons: Not too many, but the games are all on mini cd's and if not well taken care of can be damaged. But hey, let's add responsibility to the pros list. Game cost can add up, but go out to a store that sells/buys cd's and gaming stuff (in OH it is THE EXCHANGE) to get great deals!
Suggested games: Donkey Konga (for rhythm - can be played with purchased bongos or on the controllers), Super Monkey Ball (1, 2, deluxe - any of these) Nickelodeon games usually aren't too tough. As they advance in their skills you can start branching out into games that require more skill.
Hope this helps you out and happy game hunting.
P.S. My nephews are 4 and 7 and have had their game cube a year. They play pretty well and the 7 year old is now able to do games like Harry Potter and such (that he LOVES)

If you're looking for an at-home console a GameCube is you're best option. Nitendo in general markets to the younger age groups and last I knew had all sorts of games featuring Dora the Explorer, Seasame Street and others. If you're looking for a portable one then the Nitendo DS is a good option. It has relatively the same games and it'll get your kids used to portable consoles like it. I had a GameBoy Color back in the day and that was perfect for me.

Wii!!!!! And there turned right into a contemporary cost-drop! :) The snap shots are not extremely the perfect for the Wii, they're extra cartoony than real looking. yet assorted the video games are extremely interesting. And it really is depraved interactive, no longer only sit down and push buttons. it really is extra easily bowling the bowling ball or swinging the baseball bat. The Nintendo DS is likewise an outstanding "gadget" using style of video games. Plus the tutorial component, and the very undeniable actuality that there is something for anybody, acquaintances of mine have got here upon video games that are perfect for his or her son, who has had one provided that he become 2. besides the undeniable fact that, with distinct little ones, the DS is probably a nasty concept, except they percentage nicely. good success :).

My son, age three, has a Gameboy advance SP. It's nice and durable, and there are some fun games out there for it that encourage counting, colors, shapes, etc. Not to mention they have cartoon videos of Dora the Explorer, Jimmy Neutron and more if you kids get bored in car rides.

Board games like candyland and chutes and ladders, card games like go fish.
Seriously. Isn't 3-5 a bit young to fatten them up in front of the TV game console? Not to mention the fact that they'd probably break it.

V-Smile is pretty good. Games are educational, can be 2 player, and don't have to worry about scratching discs. Not so pricey either.
