I would try to stay away from sad love songs and depressing songs. Pick some songs that are more upbeat and encouraging that will tell her it's going to be okay. I know this isn't a R&B or love song but it always kinda made me feel better: It's called "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World.
Here are the lyrics:
The Middle
Hey, don't write yourself off yet.
It's only in your head you feel left out or
looked down on.
Just try your best, try everything you can.
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle, it'll up the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright.
Hey, you know they're all the same.
You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in.
Live right now.
Yeah, just be yourself.
It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright.
Hey, don't write yourself off yet.
It's only in your head you feel left out or
looked down on.
Just do your best, do everything you can.
And don't you worry what the bitter hearts are gonna say.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright.
It always made me feel better because it just keeps telling you that it's going to be okay.

To add to kvnpipe's excellent suggestions of Radiohead and the Cure, might I suggest Morrissey, Beck's album SeaChange, anything by Jeff Buckley... just teasing. HAPPY MUSIC. NOT SLOW music, not nostalgic music, no soppy top 40 garbage, cruise around itunes, look at peoples' odd compilations, some odd, happy sorts out there! Look for stuff like the Hormonauts (Italians doing rockabilly they have super version of My Sharona!) and the Big Doowopper (I'm an atheist and I LOVE "God Put a Rainbow in the Sky" it cracks me up), some silly Bollywood Disco songs, just have fun, and fine fun weird music....

If she's having a bad time the last thing she needs is love songs or sad songs.
Cheer her up with some lively or funny songs.
Maybe all the tv themes from when she was little.
