I agree with you completely. The NBA is soft nowadays and players get suspended for fouls that wouldn't even be considered flagrant in years past.
It is sad.
Most analysts seem to think that the reason is twofold - 1. To prevent/lessen injury and "clean up" the physicality of the game. In other words to stop fights and things of that nature that not only harm one's body, but can tarnish the reputation of the NBA if they happen too frequently, and 2. perhaps most importantly - the new rules allow smaller guards to penetrate for more frequently. The reason players like Kobe are getting 81 a game is because no one can hand check them anymore, and also because a good percentage of these box scores come from free throws - everything is a foul nowadays!
It really does weaken the game in my opinion, even though it allows quick players to show off far more. Barkley put it well when he said anytime Tony Parker (a small point guard!) is leading the league in FG percentage (that was true at some point this year), you KNOW the league is trying to encourage that fast, penetrating style of play...Analysts frequently comment on this when explaining how players of old had a much harder time scoring 25 then players of today scoring 50.
I wish it were like that again also!

The game is very physical. Basketball being considered a non-contact sport is a joke. It most certainly is.
There can be frequent fouls at times, yes, but you try staying with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and NOT fouling them. They are SO fast, powerful, quick, that not fouling them is an incredibly hard thing not to do.

If it were more physical the chances of violence on court would rise dramitically. If you watch basketball you've probably seen how easily tempers can flare so refs call the fouls to make sure nothing worse happens and to (hopefully) keep players, coaches and fans in check becasue if the ref makes calls for only one team the other will become increasingly upset and more likely to commit harder fouls or otherwise no fouls at all if the ref doesn't call them.

Because many many people don't want to be seen as promoting fighting. Sure thats the thing people want to see in hockey and in racing (smashing each other i cars) and even in baseball.
But they could never get away with just removing fouls and promoting fighting. It would make the game more interesting but I still wouldn't watch it. Just quit watching basketball and watch boxing or sumo wrestling.

If you watch football, soccer, basically any sport it is all the same. It is annoying, the game aleays being stop. But if the rules are not there, that little foul for pushing could turn into much more.

have you EVER played basketball? you get pushed and shoved and it is really annoying. Personally, they make the best choice. Most of the timwe, they don't call enough. And if the game got more physical, there would be noone left to play

It's basketball not football. David Stern is trying to maintain his position of basketball being a non-contact sport.

Because it's how the game works. If you, however, want something that as you say, is more physical, then I suggest you try watching football. :-)
