I know what to look for, but I seem to recall there are standardized notations to be made on copy by en editor.

There are, but they are done by hand, not a computer. The most basic:
Three underlines means switch case
A looped line through something means delete
An up carat ^ means to insert something (also used with punctuation).
A long loop like a sideways S means to switch the items between the loop.

There are some systems that are well-accepted, but I don't think there is one standard that is accepted by all. You can check the particular styleguide that you plan to use -- they often have guides to these codes on the inside back cover or elsewhere.
