I haven't seen too many that are still going to religious schools who are goth but for the richey riches over all its a rebellion thing. They have money to waste of things and don't have to work so they can look like whatever.
They're just being like the hippies of the 60's were. Doing what they think will tick off their parents. But they aren't do a good jjob cause Daddy warbucks is still paying for the designer goth junk they wear.

My theory1 : The parents were party hounds during college. Their drinking lifestyles continued into the procreation years of early marriage. The mothers intake of alcohol during the first months of development of the fetus is know to cause serious birth defects. The defects range in seriousness, from slight mental disorders to crippling physical handicap. So, they are somewhat retarded socially.
Theory 2: The goth lifestyle may be a mental quirk they have which displays a rebellious attitude against society and religion. Ironically, the choice is an alliance with the dark spiritual forces, which reinforce the belief systems of religion. It's like an atheist renouncing God, but taking up devil worship, which is just as absurd.
Theory 3: They are so messed up by years of christian hypocrisy and brain washing, suffering from identity crisis and inhibition that they latch on to a lifestyle contrary to their upbringing. The goth is a stepping stone away from Christianity and into independent thinking.
Theory 4: A combination of all the above.

Having gone through the phase myself I think I have some knowledge on the subject.
I have a middle class family. But they're not religious. I went to a public school.
I think because my parents were very controlling over my lifestyle-which I think is more common in middle/upper class families- and because I knew the consiquenses of rebelling in other ways such as drinking or drugs-i.e. falling out of school-I chose to rebel in a way that wouldn't hurt my future but would still express how I was feeling. clearly this is all hindsight.

Lots of reasons. 1. Rebellion against parents. 2. Just because your rich doesn't mean your happy. It is proven that wealthier people tend to be less happy. So there you go. 3. Some richer kids are tired of things like this: "Stop complaining, you're rich, you have everything you want." Comments like this push kids to the extreme. So, they do the extreme and become goths. I have a lot of goth/emo friends, but we're all from a less wealthy area, so yeah... I understand goths/emo's. These are just a few reasons. A lot of the other reasons depends on the people themselves.

I don't tend to think of gothic teens due to their social class, rather than the attention they get at home and any life-changing events that have happened in their lives....my step-sister's father committed suicide when she was 11 or 12 so she's gothic but slowly stepping out of it.

yeah, i've noticed that too. i think that either their parents/siblings spend too much time at their jobs or "upper-class pasttimes" (such as meetings, dinners, golf, etc.), and so the children feel ignored, think it could be their fault that their family doesn't "like" them enough to spend time with them, and get depressed; or they get tired of being surrounded by happy preps like you usually are in upper-class areas and decide to "rebel" against society by doing the opposite. i'm not sure though....i mean i'm no goth lol.

I think it is because they have everything they think they need, and that bores them. Being gothic means that they are going against the grain, and beging somebody that their parents may not like or understand. This means that their parents may stop giving them what they want.

They must be rebelling against their happy, privileged upbringing.

those are the kids that need to act out the most, they havent ever been able to express themselves. also, they can afford to drop a bunch of cash at hot topic.
