No brand! Custom box.

First of all, if you are going to use/buy a PC, you want to get your monies worth. Don't buy a proprietary system which requires you to go to their site for updates and support (i.e. Dell). I say build your own.

Intell is an okay computer, if you are into data entry and word processing. But if you want an all around good computer, that will not have to think about what it has to do:

Buy an AMD chip set motherboard, with a new AMD processor.

I have used AMD for many years. (12 to be exact) And as a tester, I would definately choose them over Intell.

Buy a good hard drive, and good RAM (1 gig is todays standards). From there are you need is a decent video card with 128 mgs or higher.

You are set.

Mac. What do I think about Macintosh... Hrm... I can answer this with one sentence only: Why did they want to use an intell chip set.

My least favorite was E Machine and Gateway.

I used to be a rabid IBM PC/Clone user, then when in college all my computer science professors switched to the new Macs.

When I actually started using one in the computer lab I noticed things that it could do that PC's had trouble doing.

How about sitting at my mac with my brand new digital camera and having my mac recognize it and launch a program to download and manipulate the pictures, all without me touching a driver disk.

How about the reason that I can run a DVD and run 10 more apps all without waiting for the computer to swap memory, or have it slow down to a crawl.

Most people who don't like macs, have never used one. I'm a computer programmer, I can program on my mac with ease, any language. I can run Microsoft Office natively. I never have to search for drivers, and rarely find a piece of equipment that needs any extra coaxing to get it to work in the mac os.

I've got two dell laptops which run great! But unfortunately I have to keep an eye on the battery since it doesn't last as long as my mac powerbook, even though i do less on them than my mac.

I use my G5 at work and everyone always is amazed at how easy it is to use.

My personal favorite will be the Mac, why, because it just works. I'd rather concentrate on working than fixing my computer.

I don't like Mac's, I've owned 3 different brands of computers , IBM, Dell and Hewlett Packard and so far I like the HP the best I've had it for 4 years now and it still performs very well with no problems at all. I also don't prefer Compaq's although they have been bought out by HP. HP hasn't made any changes to the Compaq line yet, so the reliability factor is just not there and they are too proprietary.

Proprietary is not one of my favorite words.
When you ask what my favorite brand of pc is, its that word that comes to mind.
I like the clones (clones are computers that are put together with non proprietary parts and are easily accessible at almost any computer store) for many reasons.
The ease of replacing parts, the availablity of the parts, and the price of the parts are key factors to having a good computer.
Having a clone pc makes more sense in these reasonings.
You can also have more control in getting a pc that has upgradable capabilities and in time you can add to your computer without paying for proprietary parts and there is almost no wait time to do so.
As far as Macs go, I have heard good things about them, they are a breeze to network, have far less problems then a windows based computer has, however there are certain programs that you cannot run on a mac that you can run on a window environment.
As far as operating systems go, I lean more towards the linux side of it simply because it is more robust, more secure, its open source, and its free. It also does not take nearly any hard drive space to run it either.
My computer is comprised of many different vendors parts but all in all I would not have it any other way because when it comes time to upgrade, I can use any vendor to do this.

I perfer HP/Compaq, too, I can explain: They are cheaper to customize than Dell, often come with the ATX layout, which helps when buying replacement parts (Except the slims). They are rediculously cheaper than IBM/LENOVO and offer similar quality.

For me, the Mac is good for graphic design as you already heard, but it also has some games only available for it (Pangea Soft and Freeverse make tons of Mac games). If it crashes, Apple's updates solve it easily, inastead of looking all over for the correct driver updates, etc., on windows.

Mac is by far a better computer, especially with intel being used now.
What is great is that Mac is making their computers so that windows can run on them. It is currently in the testing phase called "boot camp", but expect to see that out. There is also a program that is out called "parallels" where you can run windows from a mac, run inside another window/screen. But there are bugs with that.

Mac-hardware (quality)
PC/Microsoft- software (quantity)

Dells are easy to use though.

I've always liked Dell. Customed made computers are usually noisier and more of a hassle. You can also get some awesome deals with Dell. Mac has the best laptops, though.

Hp is my personal favorite. Lenovo (IBM) is good. I heard lots of negatives about Dells. Mac is a great computer if you have a new one with tiger b/c of the New Intel Components

I had a Dell recently and it was both cheap and well made. Now I have an HP. The main benefit of an HP is technical support. They are free, polite and efficient and stay with you for however long it takes to solve your problem.
