it is normal for your pool to lose water through splashing, evaporation, and when you backwash. But 4" is a lot. Check around the pump for leaks above the ground. You may have a leak underground in the pipes as well. Fill the pool back up to a normal level and make a mark of the level. Check it 24 hours later and see how much the level has dropped. If you have another 4" drop, there is a leak somewhere

I hope you are talking about the water level here. If it is the pool itself I'm thinking a sink hole is opening up and you might want to get out.
As far as the water level.. depending on the placement of the pool the water often drains out and can end up in the foundation of your home (this happened to your neighbors). If you are lucky enough to have a pool further away from your home where this will not be an issue you can move on to your next step.
Call a pool maintenance company and have them come, drain to pool and repair any leaks. They may need to reseal the pool (not sure what your pool is made from).
You may have a problem in the line too but the pool maintenance folks would be able to locate that issue for you.,
In our area there is a company called the Swimming Hole and they have a bunch of vans they dispatch to deal with pool problems like yours.
Good Luck

Before you panic: Fill the pool back up and get it circulating. Check the backwash line (if you have a sand or DE filter.) It might be trickling out the backwash. Could be as simple as replacing a gasket or "o" ring. If that isn't the problem then you need a service company to run the problem down further.

I would call the pool co, right away. It sounds like there was not enough support for the weight of the pooal and water. Not to be a downer but that sounds like a huge problem.

Depends where you live. How hot was it the last day or two? Or do you have any hippo's using the pool at night?
