Most pool installers say 3-5 yrs for sand replacement. At the end of season or before opening pool for next season I usually opened the filter and removed the top sand as it was usually the dirtiest. when I got to good clean sand I replaced what I had taken out. This seemed to help my filter work more efficiently and I only replaced all the sand every 5 years.

Above ground pools: change it yearly (twice a year if you have a long swim season.)
Inground pools: Change it at least every 5 years.
