Soccer is not a popular sport because Americans think that Soccer is the most strenuous and the most unexciting sport in the world. Us Americans tune in to American Football because we like the excitement of men having an excuse to tackle other men. Baseball is America's popular sport because people can beat the living crap out of a ball. Basketball is more exciting because people like Spud Webb can dunk. Soccer is a game where people kick the ball and run. same with lacrosse and hockey. Where's the fun in that?
oh yeah, I'm an American that does enjoy soccer :-)

Because we have a plethora of other sports to choose from, unlike most other countries: baseball, basketball, football, hockey, etc. This drains away the talent that might go to playing soccer to those other sports.
We also don't have the climate which allows one to play soccer all-year round. It's a little tough to play soccer in Chicago in January when it's 12 degrees Fahrenheit and there's 15 inches of snow on the ground.

Answer is simple. "ADVERTISING". Sports are controlled and dictated by the networks in the US lets be honest. Why else they would pay millions of dollars to show these games if they could not make money from commercials. Soccer game only has one time out and thats in the middle. There are no time out every few minutes where several commercials could be aired. Because the game is contstanly moving without inturruptions there is no room for advertisements and essentially no chance to earn revenue.

I asked the same question to my American friend last week. He said it's because there's not enought intensity on the game. In American football and Basketball, you can see people touching each other and fighting over the ball. There's also a lot of scores going on the field.
But in soccer, it's more how you pass the ball and everything else. So it's less tense.

Because they have no passion in their lives. I live in the States. I go to baseball games to take naps. I goto hockey games to watch the great European players. As far as football goes each player plays like 12 minutes a game, with about 2 hours of time outs for TV ratings and advertising. Basketball bunch of floppers. And worse of all in each game, there is no passion, no cheering, in fact in basketball games they need the announcer to yell out "DEFENSE" from the speakers to encourage their team, because the rest of the fans go over there to entertain a client, or on a date.
