They are both dead.

Dumbledore: he was blasted with the killing curse and fell of the astronomy tower. Come on people, did you read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or not? I felt that the chapter about Dumbledore's funeral was written with such passion and closure.. It would be extremely cheap if J.K. Rowling were to come back in book seven and be like, "Gotcha, everyone! Dumbledore's alive and here do pilot Harry's adventure for him! Sorry for making all of you hardcore fans upset!" If Dumbledore were to come back in the last book of the series, I would be very disappointed. Harry needs to go out on his adventure by himself.
If you are not convinced, here are some other reasons:

1. If Dumbledore did not die, why didn't Snape from breaking the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy? Snape would die if he broke his promise to protect Draco. If Dumbledore were still alive, that would contradict Snape's vow.

2. What do you say about Dumbledore's portrait? J.K. Rowling specifically mentions a portrait of his being hung in the office with all the previous headmasters and headmistresses. In the Potterverse, they are only of dead people.

3. In an interview by Emerson Spartz and Melissa Anelli, J.K. Rowling responded to "The wise old wizard always dies," with "That's what I'm basically saying, yes." J.K. Rowling wouldn't lie to us. If she said he's dead, he's dead.

For those of you who believe that Dumbledore is alive, you may need to go back and do some re-reading.

My guess -- Sirius is dead and Dumbledore is not.

I suspect that Dumbledore and Snape used The Draft of the Living Dead to make it look like Snape killed him.

Of the three potions displayed in the first Advanced Potions class only the Draft of the Living Dead was not used. I think it was a clue.

I hope that I am right -- because Dumbledore dying in book six would be trite. It would be too much like Gandalf and Obi Wan. I want something different here.

If Dumbledore is dead, then there are too many people that Harry needs to get in the next book. He'd have to get Malfoy, Snape and all the pieces of Voldemort's soul. I suppose that Neville could get Bellatrix. But if Dumbledore turns out to be alive, then Harry can concentrate on Voldemort.

Yes - And JK says they aren't coming back. There's no way Sirius is going to emerge from the vail after Voldemort's defeat (if that even comes), nor will Dumbledore return, emerging from the white tomb. Their deaths were meant to be turning points in the story - to teach both us and Harry that his life is not fun and games and a funny prophecy like on TV. It's serious (though ficticious).

The better question is: "Severus Snape: Death Eater or Dumbledore's Man?"

I think Dumbledore is not dead. I think he is an animagus and turns into a Phoenix, that's why he got burnt after he died, because the Phoenix is reborn from his ashes. That's why a Phoenix is seen flying away at his funeral. Besides, Dumbledore had a reason for trusting Snape. I think he was in on this.
As for Sirius, I don't know. He looks dead, but it's a magic world, the rules can change.

Yes, they are both dead.

Harry must ultimately face Voldemort on his own, with just the love and support of friends. He cannot do this if there is a father figure hanging around to protect him. While there are still father figures, Harry remains a boy, unable to really battle a man; he must become a man himself to do the job. Sirius and Dumbledore have taught him and loved him and guided him, but he must ultimately stand alone, and for that to happen, they have to go away for good.

Just my two cents...

Yes. Sirius died in Order of the Phoenix after Bellatrix blasted him through a veil. Dumbledore died in Half Blood Prince when Snape killed him with Avada Kedavra. A lot of people think they may still be alive, but J.K. Rowling has said multiple times that they will not come back to life in her 7th book.

yes. but then again, so are harry's parents and we've seen them pop up now and again (priori incantatem, etc.)

also the portrait as someone mentioned before. there are lots of ways people can still be around after they're dead in the Wizarding world. book five touched on this a little when harry asked sir nicholas about ghosts.

but i agree with a previous poster - i think it would be cheap of jk to "bring back" dumbledore. he died obi-wan-style for a reason, and we won't know what it was until *sniff* the last book.

siruis for sure is dead and gone and dumbledore i am not sure.
i felt that dumbledore and siruis are dead becuase i think HARRY NEEDS TO DO THIS ALONE (with some help of ron hermoine etc) but as u can see evryone who has truly loved him has died one by one
dad
mom
siruis
dumbledore and i think the author(rowling) is trying to point out that in order for harry to defeat voldemort he needs to have no distractions, LOVe he needs to not focus on how siruis or dumbledore are doing to make sure there al right and fix their promblems i feel he needs to focus on just one thing KILLING VOLDEMORT, thats why i have a feeling mrs weasley might die she has said she is like a mother to harry. its so sad to say but i have a feeling from reading the books alot, that this distraction of love needs to end. so i think dumbdore and siruis are dead. BUT i have a feeling DUMBLE DORE still has more info to tell harry thus living but dying IN THE BEGINING OR MIDDLE of the 7th book.
