Yeah, its sometimes confusing for the players. That was what happened during Ghana's match with the Czech when we had a penalty. The player played the penalty when the referee had not blown the whistle because the player said he had heard the whistle-i'm sure someone in the crowd blew that whistle.

In countries other than the US, sports fans whistle when they disagree with a call/action. It's like a boo, so just keep that in mind and it becomes pretty clear when the fans are mad. . .the call or action directly before the whistling invoked the whistling.

During the Portugal/Netherlands soccer game the other day, there were lots of whistles, so it was hard to know what they were mad about exactly, but it was mostly directed towards the refs for bad officiating.

U are girht it is confusing as the other day in a match i think it was holland the player had the ball and about to cross it in for a tap in but then the crowd blow a whistle and he let the ball roll out of play thinking it was the referee signilling for off-side. His team mates ripped it at him for his mess up.

In Europe whistling is usually an indication of dissatisfaction akin to booing in North America. This is however just done with the lips if you hear a mechanical whistle being used I would say it is an attempt to disrupt the game probably at a time when the whistler's team would benefit from stopping the game.

Know what you mean, did ya ever see that game where Kuwait were playin, and all their team stopped cos they heard a whistle. Turned out to be someone in the crowd, and the other team scored. Kuwait manager took his whole team off the pitch til the opposition goal had been disallowed!

yea the whisles r blown everywhere!!! even the crowd blows whisles... that is gettin annoying to hear that... like if there is a foul near the penelty box, we hear the whisle blown from the crowd and we get excited, then we come to find out that they r still playing I think we should complain.

THAT IS AN EXCELLENT QUESTION!!!! Since I am pre-disposed to watching mainly american sports, I am used to a whistle reflecting stop of play. Those whistles make me pause for a second or two to think about why they continue to play. I thought I was the only idiot out there thinking this.

Its all part of the game, you could never stop people taking them in cos they could just use their mouths!
The players know when its the refs whistle, and whistling for the end of a game when your winning is half the fun!

They should be banned as I find it confusing whilst watching. Doesn't happen in the premiership. But talking about flares it makes me wonder how fans get these into the grounds because they are obviously a security risk.

i think having whistles in the crowd is a really bad idea. it's loud enough as it is, and whistles just add to the confusion.
