Few signs:

1) Window corrupted file messages.
2) You are missing some options for your Windows
3) Your registry keys get automatically changed
4) Some files wont delete
5) Your screen starts acting funny and starts behaving erratically even though you are doing nothing
6) Uninvited massive popups, especially as soon as you restart Windows
7) You cant shutdown or startup normally.
8) Some of your programs do not start or launch properly.

I tell all my users this:

When your computer is accessing the internet, you are prone to getting a virus. Its sort of like humans having sex. Your computer is having sex with other computers when you start getting online. In order to protect your computer, you need to put a condom on it. Get yourself a nice antivirus and anti spyware/adware software that will protect your computer. Dont let it die from computer STDs.

MySpace is the biggest site to get viruses from. Usually any blog places have people hanging around to send you a virus. Some of the classic signs are that your computer will run slow, it won't operate properly, computer programs seem corrupted (not functioning the proper way).

You get viruses for one simple reason. You're using Windows. If you don't want viruses, get a Mac.
