I can't remember word for word the story. A man driving down a road almost hit a little girl that ran into the street. The man stopped and got out of his car and went over to talk to the girl. He basically was telling her not to run into the street because she could get hit but he had put his hand on her shoulder, much like you would when you talk to your own kids about something. The parents called the cops on him because he had put his hand on the girls shoulder while he talked to her. He was arrested and was not convicted but was made to register as a sex offender. Do you think this outcome was the correct thing? What should the outcome have been?

If that is the entire story then that outcome is completely bogus. There is NOTHING wrong with touching another person on the head, shoulder, leg, back, etc. There is only something wrong when a person touches a "bad" place, which CLEARLY was not happening and was not going to happen in the middle of the street.

What should have happened? The parents should have gotten a lecture on teaching their daughter. The daughter should have gotten a lecture on not running into the street. And the man should have gotten a lecture on smartening up in our lawsuit and sex-crime crazed society. There was no need for any trials or arrests.

And how is someone who was NOT CONVICTED (ie: innocent) of a crime forced to register as a sex offender? That simply doesn't make any sense at all.

That's certainly not the exact story, because only people convicted of a sex crime must register as sex offenders. Without all the exact details, it's impossible to say whether or not the outcome was right.

there is definitely something missing from the story.

But I see at least one mistake the driver made. He should not be remprimanding someone else's child - let alone touching the kid. If he really felt the need to, he should have addressed his comments to the parents.

As described, the man in the story acted creepy and not very smart. I always reinforce to my child to not talk to strangers, and if a stranger was holding onto her shoulder, that man has stepped out of bounds, and I'd be getting the police involved too!

I agree with James - that can't be all. BUT I do know that too many people take things way to far. Accusing someone of sexual harassment or assault is serious but some people do it for the stupidest things. Same thing happens with suing people. We have a real problem with lawsuit abuse because people just have the attitude that if they do not like something they will just sue the people. It is awful. Our society needs to learn the real right from wrong and the real consequences for it and that there are consequences to crying wolf if it is not real. BUT that is the life we live in :(

He may have had previous record for sex offender status. Never put a hand on anyone's child but your own. Not sure of the entire story so I can't really judge... if it's like you said, it should not be sex offender status just putting his hand on her shoulder- are you sure it was her shoulder?

It is silly, but any unwanted touching is considered battery. And due to the nature of the victim, they might have made a deal for him to register in exchange for dropping the case.

If thats true then that sucks! The parents should have been greatfull that someone was looking out for the kid since they weren't!

That's horrible! Do you think there was more to it than that? It just doesn't make any sense!
