I am really sorry to hear that your teachers are so ignorant, but you are correct and should generally trust the books, I guess. "People" actually refers to a group of people, like by tribe or nation. For example, one can speak of the Spanish people, the American people, and so on. It may be correct for speaking about others generally (for example, "People will say anything."), but not for referring to specific groups of individuals.
Although "people" is often used by Americans in everyday speech as a plural for "person", the correct plural is "persons". Arguably, the language has changed to include "people" as an alternative plural, but that doesn't change the fact that "persons" is correct. (Tell your teachers to see how it is written in the law, if they don't believe you, because the law is generally written with deliberate precision in its grammar and vocabulary -- and uses "persons" exclusively.)
