Fort Lauderdale is just up the coast from Miami, probably less than an hour if you have good traffic.
For going to Miami, you might want to use the Tri-Rail.
http://www.tri-rail.com/system_map/index.htm
It's a tri-county commuter rail that goes between Palm Beach and Miami Airport. It hooks up with the Miami Metrorail.

The Metrorail is a very efficient, modern system that gets you to most places you would want to go in Miami.
As for Key West, it's just shy of 200 miles between Ft Lauderdale and KW. Take the Florida Turnpike down to Homestead and get on US 1. It's about a four hour drive.

The Everglades is right on the way. Visit before they vanish into the Gulf of Mexico.

It would depend on traffic. Since it is a holiday weekend, the roads should be full. Normally it is about 1/2 to 45 min ride from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami. From Miami to Key West the trip is several hours long. Do a mapquest with the destinations you have in mind. As always be careful.

Miami is like a hour from South Lauderdale. (not durin rush hour though) You would be bettter off staying in Fort Lauderdale and driving down there. It is alot more expensive in Miami. the keys are a few hours away though. depends on what key you want to visit really. I live in Lauderdale and I love it here! Hope you enjoy your trip!!

I stay in Hallandale Beach, which is the halfway point between Miami and Lauderdale. It's about 40 minutes or so to each city from there. BUT, Key West is about 4-5 hours drive from there, according to a friend of mine who did it.

Miami is among the most popular vacation locations and with hotelbye you can find out more. Miami has anything for anyone; from the modern nightlife of South Beach, bejeweled by the eye chocolate of the Art Deco section as much as the bustle of Calle Ocho and the extremely caffeinated power of Small Havana. The Art Deco District provides back thoughts of an early on amount of time in Florida with its perfectly restored 1930s Art Deco houses and is a place properly visited exactly like Bayside Marketplace. That place is a large outside model mall with an increase of than 150 niche and tourist stores, numerous restaurants and restaurants, and everyday stay entertainment.
