For the mentoes to shoot out, some guess must be produced.
In food, the most common gas producing substance would have to be carbonates.
Since pepsi is an acidic solution, probably the acid reacted with the carbonate on the surface of the mentoes to rapidly produce a huge amt of carbon dioxide.
The carbon dioxide then propelled the mentoes out of the bottle.

the surface of mentos is not smooth but has tiny little bumbs and is rough and when the carbon from the pop gets in there it causes the explosion.

the sugar forces the CO2 out of solution. it's the equivalent of shaking a can of soda then opening it.
