Yes, you can use old MP3 files that are on your HdD, and place them on your iPod. If you use a CD, you just rip the music onto your HdD, using iTunes, as a MP3, not AAC (this is set automatically to rip them as AAC).
If, when or after you install iTunes, you have to add music to it's Library. That music in your Library can then be uploaded to your iPod (when you get one).

DON'T GET AN IPOD!!!
For those of who already own one- good for you.
Not that I'm anti-Apple, but I think I'd give out my honest opinion:
Unless you want to be "cool" like other couple hundreds of people out there in the street, dominated by Apple's product, paying for iTunes download, spending time converting your file, or actually trying to put all 1000 songs of yours on there and spending hours skipping the songs you realized you don't even care for on your 3-20-30 GB portable harddrive....
Other than the fact that you can download iTunes legally, good warranty, holds enormous amount of files, user friendly interface, simplified design, there is nothing good about iPod.
How could you be/ act "cool" & "unique" if thounsands upon thousands of people already use the same identical product as you do? (and they got theirs way before you) (just think you wear the same shirt or shoes as everyone else on the bus and on in street). If you're a real "MP3-gadget" Man, you wouldn't even touch a single iPod. The designs are way too simple(boring) with limited producitivty and function (unless you spend those extra bucks on their accessories). Compare to other MP3s' (or MP4), iPod is rather big, clumsy, fragile, heavy, and less futuristic. Get something that no one else have or get something that you never seen before with change background screen color and 10 additional functions an iPod cannot do. (Yes they are out there like 4-7 yrs ago befor you even heard of an iPod)
Once you start your "legal" downloading from iTunes (I mean you pay), you are screwed. Those iTune files will only run on Apple software/ product unless you spend some time re-load or converting them to regular MP3. (aka Monopoly).
So my friend- do some on-line research and shopping, Forget about becoming an Apple Zombie with iPod on your hand.
*A non-iPod MP3 player will be 100x more likely to catch another person's attention than a regular iPod.
**There are many cellphones out there with MP3 function and memory chip slots and will destroy iPod in a snap, so think 2x before you open your wallet.
***I have many friends who have drop the whole iPod crap last year and up to recently and switch to a "real" MP3 that I never seen or heard of before, and they look amazingly sharp and sophisticated, and does way more tricks.
