Hotel California touched on many themes, including innocence (and the loss thereof), the dangers, temptations, and transient nature of fame, shallow relationships, divorce and loss of love, the end results of manifest destiny, and the "American Dream".

Members of Eagles have described the album as a metaphor for the perceived decline of America into materialism and decadence.

It probably does, but there is an actual "Hotel California" where they used to go and stay a lot. It's located on the Baja peninsula between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas. I've actually been there.

It has to do with the music industry. Hotel California was actually the Beverly Hills Hotel. aka the pink Palace. Has nothing to do with satanism or dope.

Viper hit it right in one.

The song is a metaphor for the plastic culture of southern California. In order to understand it, approach the lyrics like you would a Shakespeare sonnet. Ask yourself, "What are the really saying?"
