Subbed vs. dubbed anime? Which do you prefer and why?

I dont mind either. As long as the dubbing is in good order. Some of the actors do have a whiny voices and tend to be off.

Although, when you watch a subbed anime its not always fun to read at the bottom of the screen and miss some hot action scene.

I guess it depends on what its available in and how good the quality is.

You cant really learn new words from anime. Sure you can hear them talk it and say it a few times but remember, that word also means another thing. Its how you pronounce and use it in a sentence.

Avoid the elitists. Dubbed anime can be just as good.

Subbed!! Japanese language comes in various pitches which enhance the whole experience of watching the animation. And the quality of the video actor/actress are good!! Dubbed anime often sound weird to me, either the voice actor/actress sounds fake or they sound too mature (trying to sound young).

Subtitles on the other hand, help you to understand the anime better, without blocking much of the view or affecting the listening experience. It is important to make the "font" merge into the theme of the anime to enhance the whole experience too. (Unfortunately, not much subbing companies actually bother about choose a perfect font, they generally use the normal, white font for all the anime)

Overall, I find it easier to tolerate an "imperfect" sub then an "imperfect" dub. It's the graphic and sound (music) that matters to me most in the anime.

Use BOTH dubbing and subtitles.

People who like subtitles only suffer from misdirected snobbery or enjoy hearing screechy female voices. How can dubbing ruin the storyline? Here's the storyline: Girl with red/green/blue hair in miniskirt cries about high school while a giant robot looks on. There may also be a demon.

I first saw anime back in '89 when it was "Japanimation" and it was a 12th generation VHS dub with no subtitles. Buku-wa nihongo o benkyo shimashita. Who would have thought back then that you could eventually rent anime from blockbuster or buy Shonen Jump at the supermarket? I thought anime was pretty cool then, but after a while it's as predictable and boring as anything US made.

I will admit that if you turn on the DVD's English dubbing AND the English subtitles, they don't always match. I guess you can argue that that's due to the various meanings of a word in any language- so in that respect you're getting a version that's closer to the original Japanese if you utilize both dubbing and subtitles rather than just one or the other. I guess that the dubbing has to match the meaning and the timing, and subtitles have to do both plus fit on the screen.

Sub-titled. I find that with most dubbed anime (even live action), the voice actors lack emotion, almost like they don't even see what is happening on the screen. So in a tense scene, their voice sounds like its a sunny, carefree day. Ugh.

It depends on the voices, if i like the amercian voices better than i like dubbed, but mostly i like subbed since the jap version is usually better than teh eng versions, cause amercians edit a lot fo the good parts.

Subbed definitly! The dubb's aren't as good in quality and don't have the emotion of of subbs. If this is a battle...Subbed would win hands down!
