A co-workers husband has been diagnosed with a herniated disc.I suggested a chiropractor may be able to help him.I use one,as do many people I know. What are your opinions on them being able to help my friend's husband? Surgery is a very last resort.Thank you for your help.

Will exercises help the pain?

Yes, exercises can be helpful. Begin by stretching. Bend over forward and bend to the sides. Start these exercises after your back is a little stronger and doesn't hurt as much. The goal of exercise is to make your back and stomach muscles stronger. This will ease the pressure on your disk and make you hurt less. Ask your doctor about exercises for your back. Your doctor may want you to see a physical therapist to learn about safe back exercises.

first: go and find a doctor who does not belive in the 'fas surgery', just because of him wanting your money.
he can then advice him to for example have some special physical therapy rebuilding the weak structures in his back to keep the discs in place.
surgery truely is the last option, cause it often causes other problems + also needs a treatment afterwards. a surgeon cannot gurantee if things are going to be better afterwards or not, he can only try to do his best.
going the non-surgery way takes a long time and might cause a lot of pain, so it is totally necessary to be supervised by a doctor and please do not send him anywhere without contacting a specialist before asking if that's good or not.

good luck

Acupuncture, massage and private Yoga lessons would really help. He needs to relax the muscles that are tight and compressing his vertebrae. If he can do that, the problem will probably resolve itself.

I would absolutely go thru all other possibilities before surgery.
