Its call the World Series cause the Best Teams in the world play in it. Unlike any other sport baseball is played in many countries and the best players from all over the world come to play for teams in the US. Yes, there are players from :
Australia Bahamas Canada Colombia Cuba Curacao Dominican Republic England France Germany Holland Ireland Italy Japan Mexico Nicaragua Puerto Rico Panama Russia Scotland South Korea Virgin Islands Venezuela & W.Germany
Just to name a few plus the US and Canada. Since the teams they play for are only in Canada and the US. So the best Team can win, not the best nation, or the best player. The best team, since unlike any other sport baseball is a team sport.

Many believe that the name World Series is American hype or arrogance, but the truth is that the Series was named after the New York World newspaper who sponsored the title games in the early part of the century.
That's it.

When baseball started, only Americans played the game. No Japanese, Taiwanese, Australians, Canandians etc. We were the only ones in the world to play it, therefore it was a best in the World series. The name has been a tradition since then and will continue to be.

It is the "premiere" baseball league of the world. The best players from all over play in the Major Leagues. Try to find a team in any other league who can't beat a pennant winning team in a 7 game series.

I was told that the series is named after a newspaper or journal called 'The World'.
The paper is based in New York I believe. That would explain why it is called "the World Series".

Because we were the only country playing the sport when the World Series started in 1903.
Besides, did you bother to look up the other 4,563,722 times this question has been asked?

They have to be either in the National League or the American League to play.
I know, it's stupid. Nothing "World" in a "World Series".
Just like having a "Miss Universe" competition...seems more grandiose than it needs to be.
