Tell them that you may be stuck somewhere and have no way of contacting them. I'm 17 and I honestly don't feel safe w.o one. Payphones aren't is frequent as they used to be and a cell phone could be a potential life saver. In this era to be w/o a cell phone is suicide.

Tell them they'll be able to triangulate your position to find out exactly where you are ^^.

Push for a cell phone with a prepaid service, so that you could not spend more than you and your parents agree on.

Agree to give them the cell phone back during the evenings, to show them that you won't be talking to your friends instead of doing chores/homework.

Finally, try to pay for it, or part of it, by getting a part time job, or by using your allowance.

The biggest thing parents want is to see that you can behave like a responsible adult. If they won't let you do something, it's probably because you've done something (or they think you've done something) to break that trust. You need to convince them that you can handle the phone wisely. Ask them if you can use your own money to get one of the prepaid phones (we have Virgin Mobile, and we love it). Then use it responsibly! When they see that you can use it appropriately, they'll understand that you're serious about it and maybe let you get a fancier one.

Deffinatly don't use "but everyone has one but me" becasue ten your parents deffiantly wont get u a cell phone. Try to explain why you should have one and what the advantages would be. Such as: you would be able to reach me when i go some where. It helps to use expirences that a cell hpone would of been useful.

i'm 39 and the only use i have for a cell phone is business. when i'm not working i leave it at home turned off. i see no need for the rest of the world to be able to contact me when they don't have to. my ex-wife called me on my cell once when i was fishing and i promptly tossed it in the river.

Ask them to have you try a Pay As You Go phone for a probationary period and see how responsible you can be with that. If it works out, and they become interested, you can switch to a full time plan.

Good Luck!

bentworth78: The first sign of getting old is when you start berating the younger generation. Every generation is different and I fail to see any real difference with the younger generation. They just happen to have access to better technology that didn't exist when you or I were growing up. But just because we didn't have something, doesn't mean they shouldn't have it.

Try to sell them on the safety aspects/benefits of you having a cellphone. Tell them that they will always be able to contact you if they need to know where you are, and that you will always be able to contact them in any emergencies. These are very good reasons for having a cellphone.
