do it now. the components that are out right now are amazing. definately start with a 64 bit CPU as software companies are migrating towards 64 bit programs.

Oh, this is a good question. Okay, I won't say when Vista comes out. However, if there aren't any pressing games or applications that you positively NEED to play right now then I would hold off for six to nine months. The reason is by then DirectX 10 graphics cards will be coming out, no card made right now supports DirectX 10 (but they will support version 9.0L as a stand in for version 10 but it's not as efficient). However, you COULD build the system now and buy a stop gap card like the 7600GS or 7600GT and then you would still have (hopefully) money left over to get a new DirectX 10 card when they are out. You won't be able to build a gaming PC that lasts many years currently, you will have to wait until the DirectX 10 capable video cards come out, or use my proposed workaround.
I do not know exactly when DirectX 10 video cards will be coming out, I do know it will be at least by the end of this year or early next year and they will come out either right before or shortly after Vista comes out.

You can start researching some possible components for your computer, make a list first and if you have a extraordinary list for your computer and you think it fits your need then start building your pc now. To make it sure that your pc will last, be sure that all components from power, harddisk, motherboard, memory, OS, video card and other components should be fits in and be sure that all components had a warrantty of atleast a year. Have a research to on how to build a pc in case you need to learn more.

you can build a gaming computer today but no mater how much it cost or how fast it is today in a few short years it wont be able to play most games that comes out during that time.when computer games are developed they are always developed to use future hardware technology.so you can never future proof your pc.
