We have two cats, and a bird. We used to have another cat and a dog, but they both recently passed away.
Our dog we named Kaya, because she was a Husky and we were trying to think of a name that went with her breed. We came up with Kayak, but then shortened it because we didn't want her to sound like a boat:).
Our first cat was Spots and our then four year old son named him because he had three gray spots on his head.
Our second cat, Raistlin, is named after a character from a Dragonlance novel. Raistlin is the name of a mage who goes from a white mage, to red, to black (not necessarily in that order) and our cat Raistlin is black with white and red highlights (though we didn't notice that til AFTER we named him)
Our third cat, Tira, is named such because I wanted her to have an unusual name, because she is an unusual cat. She looks kind of like a little tiger, with strips and orangey colors to her. She has tufts of fur abover her ears..so we call her Tira:).
Our bird, is a cinnamon cheek conure, whom we bought about two months ago, and he is named Peeps. We called him that because when we first got him he would go "peeppeeppeep". And he still does!:)

So here is the roster of my current pets:
Smokey-cat- her eyes "were" gray when we first got her, I had no idea at the time her eyes would eventually be green
Willa-cat- Liked the name Will but needed it to be more femine because she is a girl so we added an A, she was previously named Lucy because she reminded her people of Lucille Ball
Natasha-cat- No idea I didnt name her
Gypsy-dog- Whent through like seven homes in one year before coming to us
Lily-dog- She is a beautiful spring flower
Bailie-bird- Second favorite teacher's maiden name (I know that is a stupid reason but whatever)
Mani-bird- From the swahili(I think) word for hope
Rih-bird- From the arabic term Banat er Rih or daughters of the wind, this was the name used for their cavalry which was composed only of mares
Hoggle-lizard- see "Labyrinth" (I was like seven when I got him)
Edelweiss-dog- white and puffy
Blaze-dog- missing the top layer of skin from her head when she was born so she has a small mohawk we call her blaze
Noodle Butt Head-cat- came to us with the name noodle, became noodle butt because he likes to shake his rear end and progressed into Noodle Butt Head because Step mom did not like him
Kinnikinnik-cat- We like nature I guess
Whitney-cat- Mt. Whitney in Washington
Cappy(does not belong to me)-horse- has caps on his teeth from when they were kicked out

Ok so maybe I am not qualified to answer this as all I have ever had are fish! But I had one of those goldfish that have the chubby looking cheeks. I named the one that I had chunk after the character in this movie from the 80's named Goonies. Loved that silly movie!

Right now, I have a french bulldog named Betsy, and that's just the name she came with. As far as cool names go, I used to have a boston terrier registered under the name Weiland's Little Pancreas and we called her Panc.

We have a whole zoo so here we go:
Lucky the dog was named Lucky because we rescued him from being on a 6 foot chain for the first 9 months of his life (as soon as he started to chew or be a puppy, they just chained him outside.
PoPo and Zabba 2 dogs that were dropped off at my house when they were just barely had their eyes open. Popo looked like a little polar bear and Zabba would sing and we started calling her Abba, and somehow it became Zabba.
Homer, Mastiff was named because he was a rescue dog from New Orleans and for some reason Homer's The Oddessy stuck in my mind.
Freckles, dog, because she has freckles all over her nose.
BeeBee, is short for Bitchy Baby...I was going to get PoPo and Zabba spayed but we didn't catch them in time...so they both ended up pregnant and Zabba had her pups 1 week before PoPo. When Popo had hers, Zabba just went and stole BeeBee and then left her; I couldn't get into where PoPo had her pups, so I bottle fed BeeBee for 2 days until PoPo came out to eat, drink etc. and decide yes that was her baby. But BeeBee even when she was brand new and deaf and blind (puppies are born deaf and blind and depend on smell to find mom etc.) she would growl around her bottle.
Calamity Jane Puppy (CJ for short) she chooses to take the hardest way, no matter what...over you, under things that should be too short for her to get under.
Chewy Pup...first he got that name because he will talk to you and his voice was changing and he sounded like Chewbaca from Star Wars, but now it is because he chews everything...but he will eat anything from cole slaw to watermelon.
Ferrets: Biting Little *****, obvious. Chilly Willy, he is just a cool dude; Boracha (Spanish for little drunk girl, she does her happy dance and dances off the couch, hammock etc; Chunky Monkey, fat ferret who loves ice cream; Scrat--he was so skinny when we got him he looked like that critter from Ice Age.
Cats: Bast, she looks just like the statues of the Egyptian cat Goddess, Catastrophe, he will go running down the stairs and trip and fall all the way down and try to grab any thing he can to break his fall, Pink black and white cat with a pink nose (I was running out of cool names)
plus we have horses, the mane ones are: Dash, Jitters, Socks, Ginger. Plus sugar gliders, love birds, a macaw, 2 alpacas, and 3 tanks of fish etc. Forgive spelling, spellcheck is not working again.

My lil black kitty is named Sabriel, after the Garth Nix books. My fish, a very dull, nearly translucent Beta, is named Neville the English Beta. It should be obvious why I named him this.

my horse's names are Cash because he came with that name and Tucker because it fit him. Names just flow. My dog, yes a girl, is named Beau because she's a tomboy and it's cute like that. the cats that got eaten :( were Rascal because he was so mischevious and got in trouble constantly and Mary because it's unusual for a cat but she was so dainty and gorgeous, she knew she was cute!

My cats are Jemima (coz it's my favourite girls name and it's unlikely I will have kids) and Ruby, coz she is marmalade orange colour and I thought it was a cute name.
I have also had Daisy (again a cute girls name) and Diesel (he was black)
Toffee and Pepper (they were ginger and grey)
Jester and Grendel (they were named by my ex-husband who was a Marillion fan)
I usually go by colour or if I just like a cute name.

I have 2 cats. One is named Kafka, because she's grey and very introspective. The other one is named "Punta" which is a cute name, but it was a mistake. My boyfriend meant to name her "Puta" which is spanish for "whore", but instead, named her "Punta" which is spanish for "point", which is funny, because there's hardly anything about her that is pointy, she's a very squishy round cat.

I have a white pittbull and I named her Agnes.
Mainly because I was sick of trying to pick names, and she has always been a slow mover with a wrinkly face.
My cat is named Phil Jones. (PJ)
He used to follow my step dad every where and we just started calling him Phil Jones...
