1. Turn off the pilot valve and ventilate area for at least 10 minutes.

2. Uncover protected area (remove metal shield).

3. Prepare extended-nozzle lighter or long match (or other).

4. Turn on pilot (and hold down button if required -- read instructions on heater).

5. Proceed to ignite pilot.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions which should be posted by the valves for the heater. The most important thing is to turn off the gas and let the area get purged of any gas before you try to relight. As others have said, you'll need a long match of BBQ type lighter to reach into the heater. If you are not comfortable doing this, you should call a plumber or your gas company. Better to pay a few $$ then to blow up your house!

What is a hot water heater? I thought they were cold water heaters. Remove access cover, turn the large knob to pilot position, depress small red button and light pilot. once the pilot lights keep the small button depressed for 1 minute. T.he pilot light should stay on. If it dosen't the thermocouple is defective. I f it stays lit return large knob back to on position.

I assume that your water heater has to be lit manually.
I recommend one of those long grill lighters as someone else mentioned.
If your water heater is one of those newer models that can be lit by pushing an igniter and it isn't lighting, than you need a new thermocouple. For this I recommend hiring a professional, for safety reasons.

Hiamp has the answer but, check this link, page 20 (lighting instructions) these are pretty common on most gas water heaters.

Very carefully!
Find where the "Pilot light" is located then while holding a lighted match by the pilot light turn on the gas, the pilot light should ignite right away. If it does not turn the gas off and wait a couple of minutes before trying again.

The safest way, however, is to call your gas company and have them come and light it for you, and show you the correct way to do it your self.

Either a long lighter, or they sell extremely long matches that are used to light pilot lights...such as for a large heater.

Best way is to get one of those long barbeque thingys so you don't need to get too close. That is of course if it's not electric.
