Is it pronounced to rhyme with "last" or with "taste"? Is there an internet source that provides pronounciation info for mythological names?

There is no "correct" pronunciation. Ancient egyptians never recorded vowel sounds. We can only guess what the names sounded like.

Concur with the above ... the Egyptians never left recordings and their hieroglyphs are pretty unhelpful. When I was in Egypt, the tour guides all pronounced it Bast (rhymes with last), or Bastet. But they were modern Egyptians, who are Arabic speakers.
It could be Bost, Baist, Best, Bust, Boost, Bist or anything else. We don't really know.
I must say that, to an English-tuned ear. Bast sounds best.
Cheers.

Hmm, lets see. I don't know very many Japanese sounding names, but here are a few other uncommon names. While not super-uncommon,If you want something related to Christmas, since it is quickly approaching, you could go with a name like Tinsel or Holly. If you wanted a different sort of name, you could go for a mythological name. Here are a few examples: Calypso (nymph in Greek mythology) Luna (roman goddess of the moon) Eris (Greek goddess of discord) Bast/Bastet (Egyptian cat goddess of love, beauty, and the protector of women) Isis (Egyptian goddess of love and magic) Aine (pronounced Ahn-yah, Celtic fairy queen/goddess of the moon, healing, protection, vitality, and prosperity) One of the foster kittens I used to have sounds like the kitty that you have now, minus the leg part. ;). Her name was Belle, after the french word for Beautiful. Good luck with your kitty, I hope this helps!
