Because a lot of shoppers like myself prefer to pack their own stuff. At our local supermarket the cashier always asks if we want help packing though so the option is there.

For a start the supermarket would have to pay these people to do the bag packing so prices would rise.
Everyone has different styles of bagpacking, I take bags for life and a box with me for instance.
Many youth organisations use bagpacking to raise money, this is very productive for both the shop and those raising money.
In most supermarkets now you are asked if you like help to pack your shopping anyway.

You can get that help if you need it. Just ask the checkout person.
Could you imagine doing that job all day? Don't think it would be many people's lifetime ambition!!!!

they do? in asda i always get asked if i want a packer, but i always refuse as like someone else said i prefer to pack my own!

Sometimes the person at the till does it for you (they do in Sainsbury's anyway).
