Earned Run Average, calculated by taking the total number of earned runs, divided by the number of innings pitched, and then multiplied by 9. Measures how many runs not due to errors the pitcher is giving up on average in a 9-inning game.

ERA in baseball is Earned Run Average. It's how many runs a pitcher lets per 9 innings (1 whole game). You get the ERA by: Number of Earned Runs * 9/ Innings Pitched.
Example: 5 ER *9= 45 / 36.0 IP = 1.25 ERA.. which is pretty good.

Kimmy, the ERA of a pitcher tells us the number of runs he gives up over 9 innings. That way, you can compare how 1 pitcher is doing as compared to another.

It's the number of earned runs allowed divided by 9. It doesn't count any runs let in by errors. What it doesn't show is how good your fielders are. Example a pitcher who gives up a lot of ground balls will have a bettter ERA if the fielders behind him are better because the fielders will get to more gound balls than other fielders who might allow the balls to go through for hits.
