You're working at your desk, trying to ignore the tingling or numbness you've had for months in your hand and wrist. Suddenly, a sharp, piercing pain shoots through the wrist and up your arm. Just a passing cramp? More likely you have carpal tunnel syndrome, a painful progressive condition caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers (although not the little finger), as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move. The carpal tunnel - a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand ¾ houses the median nerve and tendons. Sometimes, thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling narrows the tunnel and causes the median nerve to be compressed. The result may be pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. Although painful sensations may indicate other conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common and widely known of the entrapment neuropathies in which the body's peripheral nerves are compressed or traumatized.

What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?

Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers. Some carpal tunnel sufferers say their fingers feel useless and swollen, even though little or no swelling is apparent. The symptoms often first appear in one or both hands during the night, since many people sleep with flexed wrists. A person with carpal tunnel syndrome may wake up feeling the need to "shake out" the hand or wrist. As symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day. Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. In chronic and/or untreated cases, the muscles at the base of the thumb may waste away. Some people are unable to tell between hot and cold by touch.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed at the wrist causing symptoms like tingling, numbness, night time wakening, pain, coldness, and sometimes weakness in parts of the hand. CTS is more common in women than it is in men, and has a peak incidence around age 50 (though it can occur at any age).[1] The lifetime risk for CTS is around 10% of the adult population.[2]

It doesn't give an exact number. I say go to the doctor. There are things you can do if caught early to avoid surgery.
I know carpal tunnel is a repetative stress injury so I'm thinking that it depends on genetics, the type of stress, the duration...You should see a doctor about this. Either you have it or you don't. If you go, you'll feel better and stop worrying.

Good Luck!

It really depends on the person and how much inflamation they already have built up in their system.

Inflamation is the main cause of why we have so many health problems.

You need to find something that addresses inflamation in the body, but htat has no side effects.

Nobody knows for sure how fast , however it's more likely it has been developing over a long time. If you sleep with your wrists bent and also when working on a computer while your wrists are bent. C.T.S. is inflammation of the tendon sheath lining the out side of your ex tenser tendons at your wrist. When the sheath swells ,the tendon on the inside has more trouble sliding. this is what causes numbness and pain...your symptoms may have come on fast, but you may have been developing this for a while...good luck!!!

If you have it?
Taking 100 to 300mg of vitamin B-6 daily will cure it just as good or better then surgery.
You have just a 50/50 chance for surgery to solve it. That is if surgery does anything at all.
The vitamin way...may take a few weeks to notice. But you will get to a point that you will forget you ever had it.

I got it once from scrubbing a pastry rack with a brillow pad. It hurt like a tooth ache at night mostly. It went away in a few weeks, and I never cleaned that rack like that again.
