For the same reason they name their boats after women and because they name their peckers, too. My first husband was "Mr. Happy". Now I am married and this husband has deemed his "Stiffy". Hope that helps.

Well, there are a few reasons for this. generally, cars, especially sports cars that are often named, are very curvy, sensuous vehicles. There has long been a tradition of a car having a female like presence. There is also the fact that for dedicaed car guys, a car is a passion. It cold also be the fact that they do not want to "ride" a guy.
For me, a car should have some sort of nickname to be called. While none of my cars has ever had a female name, I never owned a really "sexy" car like a Porsche or Ferrari. If I did, I'd likely give it a female name, much like many boaters do with sailing vessels. (In MD, the tradition is to name the Skipjack sailing workboats with female name, such as Martha Lewis, or Kristin Kelly.)
Oh, in Russia, ships are known as masculine, so maybe they give their cars male names too. Something to ask....

Well, not all of them. I think most cars have a masculine touch and those are named after men. Those that look feminine (smaller and weaker looking but with nice curves) are named after women.

They name them after women because they feel like it's a human. They feel like it is a precious baby that needs nurturing. When men get cars, they treat it better than they do their own women. It gives them the authority to show off what great rides or automobiles they have.
So when they name their cars they make it feel like its one of the same species and makes them happy.

I think that they consider their cars personal belongings that they own and have to take care of. Like the way men have viewed women for centuries.

Men love cars and men LOVE women. Why not have them both at the same time! LOL

That's actually quite simple. Cars are, for the most part, quite tempermental. They act up from time to time, sometimes for no apparent cause or reason. Therefore it makes more sense to give a car a female name than a male name.

Language. In almost every other language related to English, nouns are either feminine or masculine. Cars in those languages are feminine nouns. We have long since dropped the feminine and masculine tenses for nouns, but our culture retains the ideas that certain items are female or male. Add to that the way that men lavish care and affection on their "ladies," and you get a really long lasting trend.
