Yes, and it certainly isn't the only one. The 'war on drugs' is primarily rooted in religion, as are sodomy laws, etc.

If you are a Mormon or Muslim (they actually allow 4 wives to the wealthiest class) than it can be considered an imposition of religious belief. Many tribes had practised polygamy not as a religious belief, but more as part of the social strata/structure. The main arguement against polygamy is that it tends to keep women down (bearfoot and pregnant). Economically most if not all men can barely afford to have one wife let alone more. There are advantages though as historically the number of available women has exceeded the number of men making it difficult for them to marry. Additionally, it eliminates the need for the ugliness of divorce when an accident happens and quickly determines responsiblity.

No, banning polygamy is not religious, it is societal. If you've been following the story of the communities in Utah that have the plygamists in them, you would hear about tons of young men who are forced out of the communities so there will be more women. It is all very strange and no society could function like that for long with so many men running around without a family to call their own.

This is not a MORMON thing, the Main Mormon religion has not practiced polygamy for 160 years and then it was only for 3 years. Polygamy is part of the Flds church and it should be banned as it is illegal in the U.S. The Flds church is located in Arizona, South Dakota, Texas and Utah.

Every one of your rights has limits. Yes, a ban on polygamy is a limit on your religious practices, but so is ritual human sacrifice.

Polygamy is not usually just the joining of more than two consenting adults. It usually involves child brides and the exploitation and molestation of minors. That is why it is outlawed.
