Three men rent a hotel room at the cost of $30. THe manager not realizing that the price of the rooms had dropped to $25 sends the Bellhop up to the room with the $5 to return to the men. On his way up to the room the Bellhop decides that $5 is going to be diffcult to split between three people and decides to keep $2 and give $3 back to the men. So now each man had paid $9, totaling $27, plus the $2 the Bellhop kept equal $29. Where is the extra dollar..

each person gets $1 back, so that means 25 + 3 = $28
and the bellhop keeps $2, and thats $30

out ($30) = rent ($25) + return ($3) + Bellhop ($2)

Or what they paid:
Out-of-pocket $27 (3*9) = Rent ($25) + Bellhop ($2)

The twist is:
The words are adding the Bellhop ($2) and the Out-of-pocket ($27) when the Bellhop is part of the Out-of-pocket.

the men did not pay $9 each, they paid $25 + $3 a total of $28 with $2 kept by the bellboy. Rent was supposed to be $8.33333333 per guest? Fire whoever came up with that promotion.

It's a sematic trick. Each man did not pay $9, he paid $10 and was refunded $1. The trick is in the maths because $25 is not divisible by 3.
