Amongst those billions of planets out there the following preconditions suggest themselves as needing to be in place, which would rather whittle down the number of planets that can in fact sustain life:

a star that is not going to develop into a supernova or a black hole
a plentiful supply of water
a planet or moon large enough for its gravity to retain its atmosphere
that atmosphere to contain oxygen
the upper atmosphere able to screen out harmful radiation from the star (eg plentiful ozone)
no extremes of temperature
no excessive volcanic activity
the ingredients for the basic building blocks of organic chemistry exist in the planet's composition

There are only two elements that are serious candidates for forming the complex molecules needed to make proteins, amino acids and the other components of living cells: carbon and silicon. Fortunately Carbon is the sixth most abundant element in the Universe. The Earth is relatively well endowed with silicon but it was still carbon-based life-forms that developed here. The key step is the creation of organic chemical compounds and the existence on the planet of conditions under which they can form.

We know of only one planet in our Universe that can sustain life. Earth. Given that there are about 40 trillion planets in our universe and that 80% of all stars are similar to our sun and also that we know that other stars have planets orbiting them, then one could guess that there would be billions of other planets in our universe that are capable of sustaining life.

because the universe is sooooooooo big, there could be lots and lots of planets that can support life. we cant think that earth is the only planet to sustain life because we havent seen the whole universe. we dont really know whats out there.

the number could be equal with the number of the galaxies that are existing in this universe. The conditions needed are very easy for the galaxies to give. It most be in a spot where it's getting enough and not too much sun light and it must take some explosions and materials to create the ozone, land and water. the rest is developed by life.

The universe is incredibly large. We don't even know how big it is so there are probably many life forms out there. But you first must define life. Life as we know it on Earth or any form of life? There are bacteria that need no oxygen so they could possibly live in places we would find inhospitable. Not to mention life forms we haven't even imagined.

Life of Humans, only the Earth. But other creatures my be adpted to their specific planet. So, any planet can sustain life.

as many that have been touched or planned like ourS /rather unique but possible and to be in our state further a due more problems we are descendents of misshaps or would we be dinsaurs thinking and calculating this or even bees .!!!! rather how many other earth senarios one per cell highest probability but definatly possible or even non existing but in different times of there own system vs ours very remote two identicle spheres in the exact time correlations so it is true we are very unique and so stupid not realize THIS IS IT WE ARE THE RAREST COMODITY IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE BY FAR...SO FEW COMPARED TO THE STARS OR THE GRAINS OF SAND THAT WE ADMIRE SO MUCH / THINK ABOUT IT WE VERY RARE AND WE DONT CARE

as far as people know,we are the only one.according to Drake's Equation,however,the number of life-supporting planets should be millions,but relativly few of them would harbor intelligent life.of those that have intelligent life,it is assumed that they will all discover radio waves and use them to communicate.so aliens could be sending us a message right now!!!!
