Can't they stop the clock like other sports? They do it in rugby, basketball, ice hockey. Works much better cause you exactly where the game is with regards to time..

..what other sports? Rugby. And so what if they do it in the US? A football game is to have 90 minutes regulation time. The ball should be in play for 90 minutes, regardless of how long the entire game takes. The game wouldn't end up being too long as the ref is in control of how long the stoppage is (ie: a yellow card for time wasting).

Stopping the clock allows time keeping in football to be more transparent.

Because people criticise American Football for needing 3 hours for a game which 'lasts' only 1 hour.

The soccer game is 90 minutes. On these instances of the game it could be up to 120 minutes long. Can you imagine how long a soccer match would be if it was 120 minutes and on top of that you stop the clock. When was the last time you run for two hours straight?

Not having the clock start & stop makes it more organized, for example, a game starts at 2pm and it will end by 3:45pm+- 3minutes. BUT, it would be good if the clock on the BOARD was true, not the refs private little clock.

Stoppage time is for when theref gives yellow cards to people or for the time some things take up, like people getting fouled mostly and substitutions.

No, they let the time continue and if they did stop the clock, oh god, it would be so boring. Just add the stoppage time at the end, just like it's been for decades.

No because than they'll start selling ads during the game and it'll go on forever. I prefer stoppage time.

The reason is that they add the time that was wasted together, the result (in minutes) will be averaged and added in the last few moments.
