Work hard, either be athletic or musical, do community service and join clubs and be leaders in them (or try to). Most important is to apply for them. A *lot* of people don't, and you'd be surprised that your chances at getting a scholarship is easier than you think!

What do you do? Get good grades? Excel in a sport? are musically inclided?
You have to find out what you are good at, concentrate on improving that to the fullest potential and then search for possible scholarships and apply.

As you supply no information about where you live, where you want to go to school, nor what you want to study, my best advice would be to go to a public library. Most libraries will have books listing available scholarships and grants, etc. Good luck.

there are so many scholarships available. the three major categories to qualify are:
1) merit-based --- meaning you earn it by having good grades or demonstrating excellence in a certain subject or activity.
2) need-based --- it is given based on your inability to pay for college. they will judge yours or your parents' income.
3) affiliation --- for belonging to certain organizations, if your parents are alumni of certain schools, or for participation in certain activities.
start by filling out the FAFSA... Free Application For Federal Student Aid. This is a broad application that will include multiple grants. you can also have your eligibility forwarded to multilple colleges, and they can then use it to qualify you for grants and scholarships specific to the school. so be sure to list all schools you are interested in attending on the FAFSA.
if you belong to any civic organizations, check to see if they offer any scholarships for members. check also with your church or spiritual group. and be sure to talk to your guidance counselor... he or she may know of some programs you might qualify for.
be sure to search all of your options. i was able to go to college and only ever paid for one class with my own money. between all of my scholarships and grants i even got a "refund" check in some semesters for grant money that was left over after all tuition, fees, and supplies were paid for.
