Probably in the middle ages. Alchemy has, in essence, become Chemistry.

A good history book on the subject, I would suspect.

Alchemy is not a science in the true sense and is essentially dead. It has more or less evolved into the sciences of chemistry and metallurgy and to a lesser extent physics and electronics.
