What's the best way to travel and stay there? I'd like to stay probably in the Tokyo area but that's not really mandatory.

I might add that I am on a fairly tight budget. How much do you think I should expect to spend on travel/accomadation alone?

You can get from London to Tokyo for a reasonable price on Virgin. In Tokyo the cheap places to stay would be youth hostels and gaijin houses at about 3000 yen a night. I guess if you want to eat cup noodles and hamburgers you could eat for about 1000 yen a day if you had to. Erai has the right idea-get yourself a JR railpass.

It's cheaper (sometimes) to fly indirectly .. I saved quite a lot when I first visited Japan by using Aeroflot. Other people I know have used Asiana, or Cathay Pacific. It takes longer, but it can be cheaper! Go to an online company like EBookers and compare prices!

I don't know anything about hotels in Tokyo, but if you go to a travel agent and make inquiries about package deals you might get lucky...

As for food, it is entirely possible to eat for about 1,000¥ a day without resorting to cup-noodles or hamburgers!! In fact, MacDonald's is less good value than many chain restaurants, and the quality is the usual garbage too! Just look around when you're here, and you'll spot lots of places with cheap set menus! Most of them include a drink too, even if it's only water in some of them! 1,000¥ is about £5 by the way..!

Best way to travel is by train. Look into getting a rail pass before you arrive. They are not available once you arrive in Japan. I believe they are for either three days or a week. You can use this pass on any Japan Railways train and on the bullet train as well. Although this is not for reserved seats. That costs extra.

You have quite a few options on what type of accomodations. It all depends on how much you want to spend. There are hotels, hostels as well as Japanese style inns. Or if you really want to budget, you can try what is known as the foreigner's guest house. In any case, you want to find a place near a train or subway station to make getting around less of a hassle.
If you don't make reservations ahead of your arrival, there is a tourist info office at Narita airport.

Hope this helps.

i think it's better to provide more detail, such as your budget
(tight is vague) and your interests (such as 'want to see temples'
or 'manga' ?) so that you can get more useful info for you.
