With Windows XP, Microsoft instituted a program for drivers and applications to be approved/verified by Microsoft, giving Windows users a further level of confidence in their systems - by only installing verified software, you'd reduce the chance of your system having problems. However, many legitimate and useful programs do not have this verification, and still work fine and do the job they're supposed to - AVG free edition is one of them.

I was an avid user of Norton for quite some time until I realized it was one big joke that wouldn't get rid of some problems and the constant paying for it was getting absurd. (I run several computers and had to pay for each one). I got rid of all traces of Norton and installed AVG free, it removed the problems that Norton wouldn't and I have not had one single problem with this program. Also as far as your question, any program you get or should I say most, will have that disclaimer on it when you go to install it, just to let you know that your computer itself may have issues and not run the program effectively, it's also just a last minute safe guard your computer will do, "hey before you install this make sure you are aware it could cause a problem" that kinda thing. Make sure you are downloading AVG from the Grisoft website.

I have to agree with Shadow's previous answer. AVG is a good free anti virus program. As he told you the warning comes from windows so you might install it. Now, in my experience (I'm the manager of the system area in the company I work for) any anti virus (including Norton, McAfee, Panda, AVG, or any other ) is a complete safety solution. What has worked for me is:1)Keep your pc updated (including Windows itself and the anti virus you choose). 2) Install an anti spyware program (such as Spybot or Adware) 3) Watch out the pop up windows you might get while browsing or downloading. Most of the problems come when you download "free" stuff such as screen savers. Also beware of downloads you do not requested.

Sounds like your current anti-virus software is getting jealous.
AVG is very safe, assuming you have downloaded a copy directly from their website. Usually software providers also provide checksums with their dowloads so that you can verify the download was never modified. Use these!
Anyway, yes AVG is quite safe.

Let me say on this...
There is no one software in the world That is 100% save or perfect...
You just have to choose & decide which one to use....even if you have to take a risk.
