i suggest the train, but be sure to research the different routes and stops before you go, because it moves fast. train stops are generally less than a minute at each station (so that answers your "how fast is it" question), so if you miss your stop you may get really confused. taking a cab can be very expensive and time consuming, becase of getting stuck in traffic and such - and the bus can get slow because of traffic too. the train is the most sensible way for getting from place to place in a sufficient amount of time. you can check out www.transitchicago.com to look at maps and schedules of the trains that run around actually downtown, and www.metrarail.com to look at the trains that run into the suburbs.

Take the train or the bus. Lincoln Park is pretty big and depending on where you are, there are a number of routes to take. But let's assume you are taking the el train. From lincoln park to the field Museum, you'd take the Red line train downtown, get off at Jackson, then switch to the Museum campus bus that runs east on Jackson st. I believe. I would estimate the trip to be about 35-45 minutes. With a bus pass, it would cost you between $1.75 or $2.00. A cab ride from Lincoln Park to the field Museum would cost about $35 with tip, depending on what time of day. Take the bus...

With the Chicago transportation authority(a.k.a the CTA) It works in a weird fashion. If you don't really have to be somewhere on time it IS on time. But if you are in a hurry, it can sense that, then its and hour late and packed with other riders.
But it is cheaper than a cab if you know how it operates. depends on how long your staying but if its a week you could get a 7 day pass for 20 bucks, unlimeted rides for a week. if you travel the city usibng just the cta it will amount to huge savings cuz the cta prices have risen for regular fares. or a 30 day for the month.
linkin park to the field museum should take about 45 mins. on the cta, but Im not sure about the metro pass.

Knowing that you'll be in Lincoln Park helps to answer this question. From Lincoln Park the public transportation (CTA) is very reliable (although sometimes not so fast). Nevertheless, it's INFINITELY better than taking a cab.
The train is almost always quicker than the bus (there are no red lights or traffic jams with which the train must contend), but there are times when you may have to take the bus if it gets you closer to your destination than the train.
Cabs aren't bad. There's nothing wrong with using them, but you may want to limit their use to when you need to get to your destination in a hurry and the distance isn't so great.

I once visited Chicago and caught a cab from the Hilton to O'Hare airport. The fare cost me almost as much at a one night stay at the Hilton did.
My advice, use the train or bus, it'll be a whole lot cheaper.

Generally speaking, between Lakeview and Roosevelt Rd, you can take public transit. It's dense with trains and buses.
It is definately cheaper. As far as faster, it depends a great deal on what else is going on. For example, during Taste, I wouldn't go through the east half of downtown by car if you paid me.
The L is efficient and fairly quick.
