I've got these massive brambles in my garden which are starting to take over everything. Problem being they're huge. I can't burn them as my garden is surrounded by other gardens. So what's the best way to get rid of them? (I live in England if that helps)

Chop them down and dig the root out, when it grows again as it will do use roundup on the shoots as soon as they appear through the soil, after about 12 months the remains of the bramble will be under control and it may take another year before it gives up.

The problem is that if the brambles are that size, the roots are going down 20 feet. You can apply Roundup till you're a little wizened old man and they'll still be growing back. Plus glyphosate depends on there being lots of top growth.
This method allows you to cut them back; and clear the edges, or the whole lot.
Cut back the tops, cut them into short lengths and tie into bundles.
When you get to the stump, make a collar out of packing tape and fill it with sodium chlorate or stump killer.
Cover it with a plastic bag and tape it on.
Do this in the growing season so the roots soak up the sodium chlorate. It'll rot down when it touches the soil, like glyphosate and wont harm anything else.
Some plants will return next year, just repeat as needed.

There are a couple of ways to get rid of them. One way is the way we do it here on our farm in the US. Wrap a chain around the base of them a couple times then hook that to a bar between the two hydraulic arms of a tractor. Lift the hydraulic arms up and up comes the briars. We've done the same thing but with a tri-pod and a come-along winch.

If you don't have a tractor you can try pulling them out with a truck, just be careful. And NEVER use a rope. A rope will stretch and can sling-shot back at you and kill a person if not careful, chains just fall where they are at. Another option is to get a little old billy goat and tie him off next to the briars with a bowl of water. He'll clean them out in no time. One more option is to take either a weed eater with a metal blade to them or a chainsaw too them.

If you are going to use chemicals on them, I would recommend tree and brush killer. Be careful not to get it near any trees or bushes you want to live or it will kill them too. Round-up will kill basically almost anything it comes in contact with, including your vegetables, so be careful using it.

I like the tractor the best, because it takes care of the roots also and you don't have to worry about chemicals affecting your plants.

Here on the farms in the US we refer to brambles as any form of briars.

weed killer is the obvious answer, but there are different kinds, get the kind that becomes neutral when it touches soil, it only kills green matter, this will then be a protection for your other surrounding plants and just kill the bramble.

failing that a good petrol strimmer will do it, you can fix metal cutting blades to them, you can also hire them on a daily basis from any good tool hire shop.

Get a stick insect colony and use it as a food source? ;)
I was quite miffed when I got home to find my dad had pulled all of ours up (with a stout pair of gloves!) and put them in our recycling bin and I had nothing to feed my potential new pets on...

(brambles are blackberry bushes for those of you who are wondering)

Cut them down to a manageble hight then dig them out, you're probably best getting somebody in to do it for you and they will take the crap away.
