Rearrange the equation so that the variable (in this case x) appear on one side and rest on the other.
3x + 4 = 9 - 2x
3x+2x +4 = 9-2x+2x [adding 2x to both sides]
5x + 4 = 9
5x +4-4 = 9-4 [subtracting 4 from both sides]
5x = 5
5x /5 = 5/5 [deviding both sides by 5]
x = 1

Subtract 4 from both sides:
3x = 5 - 2x
Add 2x to both sides
5x = 5
Divide both sides by 5
x = 1

You need to get numbers on one side, and x's on the other.
each time you move one from one side of the equals to the otherside, you change it's sign around to be opposite,. e.g. move the + 4 to the other side, change the sign to the opposite of a plus, i.e. minus, this leaves 3x = 9 -2x -4, now move the -2x to the otherside, and change it to be the opposite sign again, this leave 3x +2x = 9 - 4, or in other words 5x = 5, therefore x = 1
