I am in Prague for 9 days in July. I would like to spend a few days out of the city, somewhere rural. I am travelling with my mother and my baby, and we are looking for a nice quiet place with a few things to see, that would be a contrast to the big city. Thanks.

You could go to Karlstejn. It's a small village close to Prague (approximately 40 minutes by train). There is a very beautiful castle over the village and the village itself is very nice too and it's pretty quiet there. There is beautiful nature around and other small, quiet villages. You can check out the website of Karlstejn: http://www.obeckarlstejn.cz/en/

You could also have a very quiet day trip from Prague to Slapy by boat. The trip takes all day and the boat sails on a very quiet river through beautiful landscape and then stops for a while in a village next to a dam before returning back to Prague. You can sit on the terrace and enjoy the view and the quietness on the way.

Then there's a small town called Marianska Lazne. It's in the west of the country. It's a beautiful and quiet town and there are famous spas in it and other nice things to see.

The town of Kutna Hora is only a drive away from Prague, and you can get a bus or train there. It is a very nice, quiet little town, with lots to see in it.

The best thing of all though, and the reason people come to Kutna Hora - is the ossuary!

It is truly a sight to be seen. It is a whole chapel decorated on the inside in elaborate style entirely of human bones from hundreds of skeletons that were once buried there.

It is not macabre at all, it is fascinating and well worth a trip.
There are some pictures of the ossuary on the second link below.

If your looking for a rural contrast, try the The Sumava National Park. It's the largest national park in central europe, situated on the south western part of the country near the borders of Germany and Austria. It's the region which is most popular with Czechs when taking holidays at home.Lots of mountains, forests and rolling hills. You can go hiking, rafting and canoeing, paragliding, cycling and outdoor life.Southern Bohemian towns nearby are also of great interest such as Ceske Krumlov,Ceske Budejovice,Tabor, etc.Plenty of further information on Czech holiday guides on internet.

I know this isn't outside of Prague, but you should go to the tv tower in Zizkov (I think its called) its a really weird building that has fantastic views of the city and a little cafe up there to sit and take the view in.

I would recommend that if you have a couple of hours, I wish I was going to Prague again its so so nice!

You can catch a train to Brno (it might warrent an overnight stay). It is a much smaller city with a castle and some interesting crypts, churches and so on. Very different in atmosphere to Prague.

A couple of hours by train is the historic spa town of Karlovy Vary (or Karlsbad). This has a fashionable centre and is surrounded by beautiful countryside, it kind of feels like tuscany. If you wan't to stay the night then the Tittytwister Hostel is a good budget option.
