If you're running Windows XP, go into help and support, then search for "disk cleanup". this will search your PC for unneeded files and remove them.
To limit buildup of these files, there are a few things you can do.
1) limit the size of your temporary internet files in Internet Explorer. You can do this, in IE, by going to tools, internet options, clicking on the "settings" button under temporary internet files on the general tab, then lowering the amount of disk space allocated for those files to 100Mb from whatever higher number it's currently set to. Next, you can go to the "advanced" tab, scroll down to the bottom section titled "security", then check the box to "Empty temporary internet fies folder when browser is closed" - this will prevent that folder from building up in size over multiple browsing sessions.
2) Limit the size of your java cache. Go to Start, Settings, control panel, then open the java plugin control panel. Go to the cache tab, empty the cache, then change the size from unlimited to a fixed number, at most 100MB.
3) if you have other browsers, go into each one, then set the cache to a fixed size.
4) periodically search your hard drive for files with the .TMP extension, then delete them - these files are supposed to be removed automatically, but often aren't.
5) if you download programs to install, then install them, the "extracted" files from the installer are no longer needed - you should be able to find them in a folder labelled "temp" somewhere on your c: drive - delete the contents of that folder, but leave the folder in place for windows to use.

Take a Valium first. And consult a local professional. Only someone who can actually look at the hardware can get you a definitive answer about what's going on. By the normal processes like defragmentation and ScanDisk. Then go for help.

sounds like you don't do anything to your computer. Every once in awhile depending on how often you use. do the following. Clean Disk as the one before me said. Then spyware scan, then virus scan. (Make sure you have latest updates) Now do a check disk (error check) on your "C" drive. If you have XP it will tell you to restart computer do so. Next De-Frag. You will think its a different computer. Now do at least once a month if you are on the net a lot then every week or two times a week
