Have you heard of those, 'baby shower by mail' things? That would be a GREAT idea for your son!! Send "invitations" to everyone and ask them to write a thought, hope, dream for your son or anything they would like to share or have learned in life... Tell them they are due on his birthday (Return SVP by..)and spend part of the day reading all of your wonderful notes from family and friends. Put them in a memory box and you can share them with him when he's older too!
Your 1 year old won't care where you take him or what you do really. Who remembers their first birthday? Why not just a family day, go to the park, have a BBQ, have presents and cake. Just a day full of fun and full of the things HE loves to do.

We just celebrated our sons' 1st birthday and we had a party at the park with BBQ and having the park there was great. It's tough that you don't have any family there to invite, but I don't think Chuck E Cheese is the place for your 1 year old. He won't "get" it. There's too much going on there and he'll just get into things that he shouldn't. Just go to the park and let him run free there. You can bring your cake and some balloons, babies love balloons. He won't remember it, it is just for you right now, but I'd bring the camera and take a bunch of pictures of all the people that are there with him. I also like the idea of sending invites to the family and having them send thoughts, hopes and prayers back to you to read. That's a great idea. Good Luck!

I think Chuck E Cheese is great for a party, but they are usually pretty packed and I don't think that would be good for a one year old! I would have the cake and presents at home, but then take him to his favorite place, like maybe a park....or a beach...if you live near one. The first birthday is a great milestone, but yet highly over rated. Some people I know went all out! Renting ponies and having clowns... but it is a personal decision...and if you want to go all out then do it! But, I have four children and they really won't remember!

Don't overdue it, one year-olds don't like big celebrations and too much racket. He won't get anything out of a chuck-e-cheese celebration, other than a stomach ache. Just have a nice little party at home. You'll be shelling out plenty of money for birthday parties when he's older, no need to waste it now.

For all of our kids 1st birthday we had a spagetti dinner at home and a cake and we only invited the grandparents and god parents. It allowed the kids to not feel overwhelmed and everyone got to play with them. Before the party we would have a family get together at the park and cook hotdogs and have chips and that was when all the aunts, uncles and cousins had their turn. Maybe instead of one big party you could have the dinner with the grandparents and then have an open house with a list of times that the others could split up into groups and stop by.

1 year olds are too little to enjoy or remember birthday parties. You are doing it for you - not for them. save money this year spend it on a big hoopla when he is 2 or 3.
