In order to see light, that is not shining in your direction,
It needs to be reflected off something, on Earth, the amount of dust in the air maybe enough to reflect the light, to show a beam of light.
At Night, with the Sun block by the earth, we get dark sky, but the Moon is so high up. that Earth usually don't block it (Earth Block the Moon, few days a Month, and on lunar ellipse).
Light from the Sun, reflect off the surface of Moon, there is little other matter in space that reflect the large amount of light as compare to the Sun.
Thus We have a nice bright Moon, on a dark night sky.

what we see off the moon is a reflection of the sun's light. the different phases of the moon is caused by shadows not allowing the light to reflect. the sun doesn't light the whole sky because it isn't really facing that particular side it has set and is past the horizon.

The same way you can see the reflection of a light in a mirror when the light source is behind you.
The orbit of the moon isn't exactly on the same plane as the orbit of the earth around the sun.

Light must be reflected off of something to be seen. When the light is reflected off of the moon it is seen but empty space(the sky) does not reflect light.

If by "sky" you mean Earth's sky, then you know that it IS lit by light from the Sun. Our sky is lit because it's got lots and lots of molecules in it and each one reflects a tiny bit of sunlight. The "sky" of space is different though. It doesn't light up because there are no molecules there to reflect sunlight.

The moon is acting like a poor mirror. It partially reflects some of the sunlight to us while we can not see the sun.

The light you see is the light that is reflected back to your eyes. You see colors because that is the spectrum of white light that is being reflected back to you. The vacuum of space and air without particles of dust and water vapor is translucent.
